We are expanding for the future, but nothing is changing today.

The Case for a Second Meals on Wheels Meal Production Kitchen in Monterey County

Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula has long served as a critical lifeline for the county’s most vulnerable residents – seniors, individuals with disabilities, veterans, and those facing food insecurity. As the population continues to grow and age, demand for our services has surged beyond the capacity of our existing kitchen. In order to continue meeting the increasing nutritional needs of our community effectively and safely, the time has come to build a second meal production kitchen.

Monterey County spans a vast and diverse geographic area, encompassing urban centers, rural communities, and hard-to-reach locations. Currently, our sole kitchen must not only produce thousands of meals daily but also coordinate extensive distribution efforts across the county. With the more-than-doubling of demand in the past five years, and more to come, strains on our staff and infrastructure have increased delivery times and limits our ability to scale. As a result, waiting lists have been considered for the very first time in our 53-year history, something that should never happen when the homebound are at risk of hunger.

A second kitchen strategically located in the city of Seaside would provide an enormous boost in meal production capacity and operational resilience. It would allow us to better manage demand surges, reduce transportation costs and delays, and expand services to underserved communities throughout the county. This facility would also enhance our ability to provide culturally appropriate meals tailored to local populations and dietary needs, improving both health outcomes and client satisfaction.

The benefits extend beyond logistics. A second kitchen offers economic opportunity through local hiring and partnerships with regional farms and food suppliers. It also strengthens our emergency preparedness, ensuring we can continue meal service during natural disasters, pandemics, or power outages, when vulnerable individuals need us most.

In short, a second meal production kitchen is not just a solution to current capacity challenges, it is a proactive investment in the health, dignity, and independence of Monterey County’s aging and food insecure populations. With continued community, donor, and volunteer support, we are ready to take this bold next step to ensure no one goes hungry for generations to come.
