Meals on Wheels boosts services for homebound seniors

After home meal deliveries increased 20%, the Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula announced Friday it boosted capacity to provide more meals to the local homebound senior population. To meet increases, the agency secured additional on-site storage, cooking supplies and a walk-in freezer for its commercial kitchen, and more staff to prepare meals.

Meals on Wheels also launched a supplement nutrition program to provide clients throughout the county with nonperishable food items and toiletries. Additionally, the organization offers seniors grab-and-go lunches Monday to Friday and fresh produce donated by the Food Bank for Monterey County Wednesday mornings at the Meals on Wheels Community Center.

“We are not only fighting the effects of this pandemic, we are building on our efforts to provide food and meaningful engagement to stem the emotional and social isolation that our homebound clients are facing,” Executive Director Christine Winge said in a prepared statement.
