MONTEREY, Calif. — Nearly 90 people are still in need of assistance after a fire at a Monterey apartment complex on Monday, with local nonprofits and businesses stepping up to provide essential support to those affected.

The Monterey Fire Department says 91 residents have been displaced after a three-alarm structure fire on Monday morning. Monterey apartment complex fire reports first death.

“Right now our need is medications, a lot of people didn’t get their medication, personal belongings, we were all rushed out of there seconds,” one survivor said.

Meals on Wheels and other volunteers are providing food to help ease the shock survivors are facing. “Means everything, a lot of us can’t afford meals, there’s a lot of people there that get their meals on wheels or get assistance, and some of us are just going as their day goes, you know?” a survivor said.

Meals on Wheels is continuing to support their everyday clients while helping the fire survivors.

“We provided 80 meals yesterday with a couple cases of fruit, and then today 160 meals with a couple cases of fruit, and then we’ll do the same for tomorrow,” a representative said.

Survivors will be moving to the Sand City Marriott on Thursday.
