Erik Chalhoub | Monterey County Weekly
Erik Chalhoub here. I once spent a morning shadowing a Meals on Wheels volunteer for an article I was writing, watching as they interacted with people who, for various reasons, were unable to get a meal for themselves.
The volunteer skillfully and compassionately delivered each meal door-to-door, and I could see how that interaction, as brief as it was, brightened the recipient’s day.
Staff Writer Katie Rodriguez’s article in this week’s edition of the Weekly highlights two sides of the coin: I was happy to see that Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula is expanding its operations, but at the same time, that means the number of struggling people who need these services continues to grow.
MOWMP is moving into the former Monterey Peninsula Power Sports’ building at 1020 Auto Center Parkway in Seaside—drive by and you’ll see a sign proclaiming the building as its new home—in a spot that’s estimated at more than 15 times the size of its current facility in Pacific Grove.
The move is forward-thinking, as demand for their meal services have more than doubled in the last five years, Rodriguez reports, making the new location critical for the future if the trend continues.
You can learn more about when the move may be completed, and how the organization is dealing with its current cramped facility, by reading Rodriguez’s article.
