Pacific Grove, Calif. – April 27, 2021 – Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula (MOWMP) announced today a major expansion of its Home Delivered Meals program serving homebound seniors and disabled adults across Monterey County. The new route marks the agency’s first-ever service to Big Sur and is supported through partnerships with the Food Bank for Monterey County and Captain Cooper Elementary School.
On the heels of its recent expansion to the Cachagua area of Carmel Valley, MOWMP is now making weekly deliveries of freshly prepared meals and food boxes to families in need down the coast. Deliveries to Captain Cooper are scheduled for midday Friday’s with plans to grow service to surrounding areas by summer.
“Reaching our neighbors in Big Sur is another important milestone as we continue to ramp up production so no local resident in need goes hungry,” says Christine Winge, MOWMP’s executive director. “Our staff and volunteers are working tirelessly to meet the increase in demand for our services and watching our Meals on Wheels van pull up to Captain Cooper is like watching the baton pass from our team to theirs.”
MOWMP’s Home Delivered Meals program has been lifeline to thousands of homebound seniors and disabled adults on the Monterey Peninsula since its inception in 1972. Since the onset of COVID-19, the agency has successfully ramped up meal production to meet a 63% increase in demand.
“In this time when more people are facing food insecurity than ever before, it is a privilege to bring our scale and experience to this partnership and we are excited at the prospect of further growth in Big Sur and beyond.”
